Science Olympiad

April 8, 2017

On April 8th, Caltech hosted the Southern California State Science Olympiad Tournament for the 2nd year in a row, and of course the Gnomes played a role in it! Science Olympiad is a nationwide K-12 organization that holds various science and engineering team competitions. This brought over 3000 attendees and 1000 of the brightest science and engineering students in Southern California to Caltech on the day of the competition.

On the day of the event, over 100 Caltech undergraduate, graduate students, and alumni served as judges, including our Gnome Vice President Peter Hung and Gnome Treasurer Julie Jester. In the months leading up to the event, a group of 15 students planned out the details of every aspect of the tournament: coordinating volunteers, preparing the testing materials for each of the 50 events, figuring out which building and room each event will take place, contacting the fire marshal for an event permit, and borrowing event signage from SURF office.

Because of the scale of this event, it wouldn’t have been possible without every part of campus supporting the effort. The Caltech Alumni Association, CTLO, LIGO, IQIM, and Caltech Graphics Resources provided financial support. The Caltech Store was opened the entire day for the attendees. The Admissions office gave an hour long presentation for the parents and the teachers.  Caltech Y provided staff support and included us as one of its Make a Difference Day site. But none of this would have been possible without the strong support of both President Rosenbaum and Vice President of Student Affairs, Professor Shepherd. Below are some pictures from the day of (taken by Bob Paz Photography).
